Toyota Cup 1995
Match summary
Ajax led Gremio Porto Alegre for the first time after penalties (4-3) when 90 minutes and extra time finished in a goalless stalemate. As is so often the case between two equally matched teams, the game was primarily a tactical battle. Ajax 's players struggled to find any gaps in the staunch Brazilian defence, while Patrick Kluivert was shadowed at every turn by Rivarola, who was sent off after a red card in the 57 th minute. The Brazilians then hung on for a penalty shootout which Ajax would dominate from start to finish with goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar saving the first penalty from Dinho. Kluivert and Arce were then both off-target before the remaining players converted and Blind stepped up to seize a famous 4-3 victory for the Dutch masters.

Key Player
Danny Blind was hailed as the most valuable player in the game after the final. Blind converted the decisive penalty but, it would be unfair to single out one player from that star-studded team. The line-up for the final read like a "Who's Who" of European football: Frank and Ronald de Boer, Edgar Davids, Patrick Kluivert, Nwankwo Kanu, Jari Litmanen, Marc Overmars and Edwin van der Sar to name but a few.

Coach
In the golden 90s, it was the hitherto relatively unknown coach Louis van Gaal who led the team to renewed success. Van Gaal is the most successful coach in Ajax history: Dutch championship (1994, 1995, 1996), Dutch Cup (1993), Champions League (1995), Club World Championship (1995), UEFA Cup (1992), European Super Cup (1996) and Dutch Super Cup (1993, 1994, 1996).
