DESCRIPTION:
Offered for your review and consideration is this quite well-preserved mid to late 19th century Scottish antique staved mahogany and maple hardwood treenware wooden hanging salt box for mounting on a wall in a kitchen or pantry, used to hold the essential preservative, salt, which was an indispensable product used to keep foods, from otherwise spoiling in early American homes, predating refrigeration. The bulbous, barrel-shaped, lathe-turned body is made of vertical pieces of staved chestnut colored mahogany and honey colored maple hardwoods. The top of the body has a wire hinged carved wooden lid, attached to the carved wood backsplash at the lid's rear heel, held to the rear top of the barrel body by wire looped hinges, on which the wooden lid pivots up and down. The lid has an interior carved ring. It's devoid of fractures or depreciating loss. The wood backsplash has a ringed, reticulated wall mounting hole where it would be hung on a wall fastener. Nice, warm, mellow honey and amber wood colors and original, honest surfaces. A great antique primitive artifact, once omnipresent and a mainstay in early American kitchens and pantries. Splendid.
