Samuel Butler 1774 - 1839 was an English Classical scholar, a schoolmaster at Shrewsbury and Bishop of Lichfield.  He published a range of educational books, one of the most popular being his 'Atlas of the Ancient World' first published in 1827 and reprinted in many editions. The maps were compiled and engraved by Sydney Hall (active 1818-60) one of the most accomplished engravers of the early nineteenth century. This map comes from the 1840 edition published by Carey & Lee in Philadelphia, US.
