Very stylish large silver lidded claret jug by James Dixon & Sons. Lovely arts & crafts style with round bellied baluster form with raised straps around the belly and neck, flared to a subtle spout, and domed lid with acorn knop. Then to a fabulous strap handle wrapped in woven raffia, splitting to 3 branches with ivy leaves at the end of each as the terminals. The thumb rest/lid pull is a dainty heart shape. There is a small, attractive engraved crest to the front of a lion. Hallmarked for Sheffield 1897.

It measures 26.8cm (10 1/2") high and 11.5cm (4 1/2") wide and weighs 655g/21.1ozt. It has an easy 900ml capacity.

Condition is very good; there has been a small and neat repair to the thumb rest on the cover at the base where is joins so it is well tucked away. There are some small areas of fire stain to the cover as a result but they are very subtle and minimally detracting. There is a very minor linear dent under the belly line which I haven't been able to show in photos and a pin-prick dint to the right of the handle. Handling wear is light and appropriate for age.
