Commodus sestertius, Roman Imperial, 177 AD -192 AD, bronze, ref. R.I.C. 312. The obverse shows the laureate head of Commodus facing right. The obverse legend is "M COMMODVS ANTONINVS AVG". The reverse shows Providentia standing left, holding a wand over a globe and has a staff in left hand. The reverse legend is "PROV DEOR TR P VI IMP IV COS III PP S C ". A lot of the lettering has worn down or was struck very close to the rim initially. Commodus is easily readable as well as the types from the design and then standard reference makes other legend easy to determine. The overall color is dark brown to olive.
