Crete by Johannes Jansson published by Georg Horn in 1684

Copper engraved map on hand laid paper with later hand colouring.

Johannes Jansson (1588 - 1664) was born in Arnhem.  In 1612 he married the daughter of cartographer and publisher Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612)and worked in partnership with Hondius in Amsterdam as a printer and publisher.  He produced a large number of maps and atlases which rivalled the quality of the Blaeu family.  Many of his maps drew heavily on other cartographers and mapmakers.  Georg Horn was (1620 - 70) was Professor of Geography and History at Leiden University.  He first published 'Accuratissima Orbis Antiqui Delineatio', in which this map appears, in 1652.  This map is from the 1684 edition of this book.

Map area is in very good condition for age, engravings are clear. Blank on reverse. Hand colouring.
