The 6502 was the first CPU sold under $100, cheap enough for hobbyists to experiment with. The low price caused a CPU chip market boom that led to the first Apple computer and many other products being built around the 6502.

Designed by MOS Technology, and licensed to many silicon fabricators. The chip became so popular Commodore Business Machines bought MOS Technology just to get the design.  

This wafer was fabricated by Rockwell International, the single largest producer of 6502 chips.
