A rare 25 cents fractional currency note from the Excelsior Bank, Athens High School, Athens, Georgia. The note is from the 1873-74 Reconstruction time period. The note shows the face value in Arabic numbers on the representation of a coin, and the Roman numerals XXV. In the octagonal shape on the left is a reddish orange circle enclosed that shows "ATHENS HIGH SCHOOL", "BENJ. T. HUNTER", across the bottom in black print the name "BENJ. T. HUNTER", is shown again along with "PRINCIPAL". The reverse, in fine detail, is showing all manner of items that would reflect various areas of class room learning, books, maps, globe, telescope, chemical jars on the shelf, etc. It seems the notes were used for training and rewards in the school, under the direction of Mr. Hunter. The note is nice condition with good edges all around, with only a very tiny piece of the lower right corner missing. The note is 3 1/8" x 1 13/16". Rare issue specialty note from in the middle of the Southern Reconstruction Era.
