Even though the decoration looks Japanese, this box is Chinese and known as "Foochow lacquerware" (from Foochow, now Fuzhou, capital of Fujian province, China). 1920s / 1930s

Decorated on the lid in enamel colors, some of them raised, two confronting dragons and a central "Pearl of Wisdom" in the Buddhist tradition, the dragons' bodies depicted with their coils 'lost-and-found' in the clouds, one dragon breathing fire and all scattered with coral colored lingzhi cloud forms symbolizing immortality and longevity.
