SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION –

L E. Smith Glass Co. -

L E. Smith Glass Co was in production well-before they began producing coloured glass in the 1920’s – having made the first headlight lens for the Model T FORD.

Smith glass is globally known for their UNIQUE formula for Black Amethyst Glass although they produced a vast array of coloured-clear (amberina, cobalt, amber, pink, green, yellow – plain & crackle) & milk-glass; tableware & figurines; with many highly collectible patterns (Moon & Stars; American, Daisy & Button; Hobnail; Diamond and many, many more ….).

The Pebbled-Rim Pattern (1935-?) came in a wide range of colours, clear and milk-glass. This pattern was released after the Homestead Pattern (1927-31) – which offered many of the same pieces BUT the grill plate was smooth-edged.

Vaseline Glass – Uranium Glass -

Antique Vaseline glass is also known as Uranium glass - glows bright green under black or ultraviolet light. In natural light this glass has a yellow to yellow-green tinge to it with an oily sheen - which is why the term Vaseline glass was designated.

Uranium oxide was used as a colouring agent from the 1830s until the end of WWI. To make the glass look more green in natural light, some manufacturers added iron oxide – so, some do not include depression-era glass in with the original antique glass as the formulations differ.
