PRODUCTS KNOWLEDGE

EMERALD

Birthstone: May

Zodiac sign: Cancer

Anniversary: 20th

Mohs Scales: 7.5 / 8

Emerald is the green variety and the most precious variety of beryl. It has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 but is brittle and sensitive to stress, and therefore must be treated with care.  The value of Emerald depends on the quality and intensity of colour, some inclusions are considered acceptable. The very finest emeralds are from the Muzo mine in Colombia and are know for their fine, pure green. Completely clean stones of deep colour are extremely rare and therefore command a high price. Emerald is found mainly in Colombia, Brazil and Africa.

The name itself is derived from the Greek word 'smaragdus' meaning 'green gem'. The ancient Egyptians mined Emeralds nearly 3000 years ago, and Cleopatra was said to be an avid emerald collector. In the 16th Century spannish explorers found large Emeralds in the possession of the Aztects and Incas and went onto discover the now famous Chivor and Muzo mines in Columbia. An emerald symbolises rebirth and youth. Believes by the ancients to empower the owner with foresight into the future. An Emerald is regarded as an amulet for good fortune and success.
