Because each doll was the unique creation of Senora Diaz, no doll is exactly alike.
However, each doll is made from a similar pattern and each doll is intrically embroidered with the same large, animated blue eyes.
In order to collect the dolls, years ago I had to await the arrival of Miguel, the dollmaker's nephew who arrives at my home
near Puerto Villarta with the dolls strapped on the back of his burro. He made a five hour journey across the mountains
from Chacala, a village with no electricity or roads.
The income from the dolls gave Senora Diaz money for corn and beans to
feed her family, and for the materials for more dolls.
