Abraham Archibald Anderson (1847 - 1940) listed artist Lived/Active: New York/Wyoming/New Jersey      Known for: portrait-figure, landscape and floral painting An artist whose multi-faceted activities included national park administration, city politics and aviation, Abraham Anderson was primarily based in New York City where he earned a reputation primarily for his portrait painting.   He exhibited at the National Academy of Design beginning 1873.  As part ot his art training, he spent much time between 1873 and 1883 in Paris where he was a student of Leon Bonnat, Raphael Collin, Fernand Cormon and Auguste Rodin. Also during the 1870s, he made his first trip to Wyoming, which led to him returning to a ranch he purchased there for every summer for the rest of his life and to his being appointed in 1902 by President Theodore Roosevelt as forest superintendent for seven years.  From this job, he earned the title of "Colonel". In New York, Anderson owned four lots on Fortieth Street and 6th Avenue, facing Bryant Park.  He erected a Beaux Arts Studio Building and became involved in city politics, which included chairing a committee on city traffic management that led to the "introduction of mounted police and stop-and-go lights."(16) In Richmond, Virginia, he established a studio and gallery, and led the establishing of the city's national air terminal by acquiring the original site to build runways and administration buildings. Anderson was the son of an engineer who became a minister, and lived with his family on the Illinois frontier in the 1860s and then settled on Long Island.Source:David Dearinger, Editor, Painting and Sculpture in the Collection of The National Academy of Design, p. 16
