Ultra RARE 1 of a Kind ANTIQUE 1876 Near Set (48/52) of

***In COMMEMORATION Of The HUNDRETH ANNIVERSARY

Of AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE***

**US Historical Info & Picture Puzzle Cards**

Hyper Rare, hyberbole, perhaps & perhaps not because since I have acquired these unique antique cards I have done a lot of research & have come up with pretty well nothing pertaining to this particular 19th century card set. I tried the TCDB but a dead end as their listings go as far back as 1880. What I did find was that their was a "CENTENNIAL Exhibition" held in Philadelphia PA in the summer of 1876 to celebrate 100 years of US Independence and the emblem/symbol/logo on card 2 is almost identical to the one used for the Philly Exhibition.

All things point to this set being issued & sold at the 1876 exhibition perhaps at a Booth or Kiosk as a souvenir and memento of the celebratory affair.

Being only card stock type paper it is a remarkable that it has survived nearly a Century and a half.

The set does feature 4 Title Cards & *4 different picture puzzles consisting of 12 cards each with each puzzle

depicting key moments & battles of the US War of Independence:

*Puzzle 1) "Perry's Victory on Lake Erie"...1 Puzzle Card missing

*Puzzle 2) "Capture Of Ticonderoga"...2 Puzzle Cards missing

*Puzzle 3) "Battle Between The Constitution & Guerriere"...FULL Complete PUZZLE

**Puzzle 4) "Surrender Of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown"...FULL Complete PUZZLE

Card #39 of Puzzle **4 contains perhaps one of the earliest images of General GEORGE WASHINGTON depicted on any type of collectible picture card??

I checked but I cant be sure but Card #4 just might be a portrait image of GW as well??

The reverse side of the cards has historical info on the predominant & influential persons

& major events of the 18th century American colonial era.

NEAR Set with 4 of the 52 cards missing (#'s 3 - 6 - 23 - 26) and

6 cards have very minor creasing (#'s 2 - 5 - 17 - 22 - 35 - 36) and

2 cards have minor corner dings/chips (#'s 11 & 20)
