Skin colour

Skin pigmentation is the colour of your skin due to a certain amount of melanin, which is a natural pigment that gives your skin, hair, and eyes their unique colour. In addition to providing pigmentation for the cells, melanin also absorbs harmful UV rays and protects against cellular damage from UV light exposure. People tan because sunlight causes the skin to produce more melanin and darken. Your skin could become darker or lighter due to changes in your body's production of melanin.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in colour than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin colour, forms deposits in the skin.

Types of Hyperpigmentation

There are several types of hyperpigmentation:

Melasma

Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes and may develop during pregnancy. Areas of hyperpigmentation can appear on any area of the body, but they appear most commonly on the stomach and face.

Freckles

Freckles are small brown spots on your skin, often in areas that get sun exposure. In most cases, freckles are harmless. They form because of overproduction of melanin. Overall, freckles come from ultraviolet (UV) radiation stimulation.

Sunspots

Also called liver spots or solar lentigines, sunspots are common. They're related to excess sun exposure over time. Generally, they appear as spots on areas exposed to the sun, like the hands and face.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

This is a result of injury or inflammation to the skin. A common cause of this type is acne.

How melanin is produced

Melanin is produced through a multistage chemical process known as melanogenesis, where the amino acid tyrosine plays an important role.

What is tyrosinase

Tyrosinase is an enzyme produced by the body and it is responsible for the first step in melanin production. It converts the tyrosine to melanin in the skin, hair follicles, the coloured part of the eye (the iris), and the retina.

How it works

LumiDerm Face Whitening contains Lumiskin ( diacetyl-boldine ( DAB ) and caprylic / capric triglycerides ) which inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, which in turn slow down the production of melanin.

Application

for overall skin lightening, apply all over the face and the neck daily after cleansing the skin. For dark spots, apply on the affected area every day.

Always use Sun protection

Sunscreens do so by preventing the synthesis of melanin so that your skin does not turn dark, whereas LumiDerm Face Whitening Cream do so by reducing the amount of melanin already present and also by preventing the synthesis of new melanin in melanocytes
