Vintage mid century 50s/60s large original oil painting from Listed American Artist Blanche Bernstein (1910-1998).  Depicts a full length portrait scene of a seated nude woman brushing her hair in front of a mirror on a small table; presumably a Circus worker getting ready for her show.  Bernstein was known for painting members of the Ringling Bros. circus.  Well done with soft lines and pleasing brushstrokes.  Nice use of color and capture of light.  No signature that I can note on the front but marked or signed ink ink on the reverse side (see photos 12).

Blanche Bernstein (1910 - 1998) was active/lived in New York, Indiana.  Blanche Bernstein is known for Circus clowns, portrait, landscape.

Known for her behind-the-scene paintings of Ringling Brothers circus figures, especially clowns, Blanche Bernstein was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. She studied at Butler University where she earned a BA degree, at Johns Hopkins University, and in Indianapolis at Circle Art Academy and Taflinger Art School. In New York, she attended the Art Students League, Columbia University, and New York University where she received an MA degree.

In the late 1950s, Bernstein painted in California along the Barbary Coast, and she also operated The Sisters Arts Gallery in Greenwich Village with her sister Elizabeth Yakovlev.

In Good overall condition.  Canvas flat mounted to cardboard with masking tape.  Was once mounted with staples to stretcher bars but was carefully removed by a previous owner.  Exhibits gentle horizontal cracks in areas from when this was once rolled.  Some very small chips to the paint.  No holes, rips or tears.  Worthy of framing or having put on new stretcher bars.  Displays tremendously!
