The 2009 Sacagawea Dollar: represented the relaunch and rebranding of the coin series. Legislation
was passed to authorize annually rotating reverse designs which would
highlight the contributions and accomplishments of Native Americans.
Although the US Mint and authorizing legislation refer to the coins as
the Native American Dollars beginning with 2009, many still refer to the
coins as the Sacagawea Dollars due to the continuity of the obverse
design.
The reverse design for this year depicts the “Three Sisters” method
of planting. A Native American woman is shown planting seeds in a field
of beans, corn, and squash. This was designed and sculpted by Norman E.
