This is a very rare English made antique oak Scribe's Desk.  It is an early model, we are guessing pre-1850's, intended for use by a clerk, scribe, or bookkeeper.  It has two front doors which open to four slots for bills, correspondence, etc. divided by solid oak slats, a pencil tray. and a slot for an inkwell. On each door brass tacks have red string which was used to secure small cards and notes.  Below there is a small drawer with a locking system that uses a brass pin.  (Note:  The original brass lock pin was missing so we had a replacement made.)  The doors are secured with a keyed latch which works smoothly with a replacement key.  The door on the left has a spring latch that helps hold it shut.  All of the hinges and drawer latch are made of brass.  The Desk is in extraordinary condition with virtually no damage of any significance that we could find.  (Some of he red strings are broken but easily replaced if a new owner so desires.)  Fairly compact, with doors closed it measures 11.5 inches tall, 12.5 inches wide, and 7 inches thick.  With the doors open it measures 23 inches.    It weighs nearly 6 pounds.

It you have seen, and loved, Christmas movies based upon Dicken's 'Christmas Carol,'  you likely did not notice the desk used by Bob Cratchit, but this is basically what it was...And here it is in time for Christmas 2023.   We thought it a wonderful addition to Christmas Decor with a connection to a Christmas classic.  Certainly is is a gift idea that is very special and unusual, perfect for someone who appreciates a rare treasure, any time of the year.  We will include the antique ink well in the photos.  Pricing is based upon others we have sold over the years.  We have had a few of these previously but this one is a bit smaller and older.  We can ship it within the U.S. safely and for $20.00 or less.  We invite your close inspection.
