Rare Antique XIX c. Russian bronze  icon  " Crucifiction"  

The icon is in good condition. The size of the cross is about 6 1/2" x 4 1/3"(16.5 X 11 cm). 

At the center of the Crucifix is the image of Christ crucified.  In the Crucifixion in the center, Christ is named "Son of God", flanked by Martha, the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Apostle, and the Centurion Longinus, and blessed from heaven by the Father.  "God the Father" is at the top along with the dove and angels.  There are five icons above and on either side of Christ :   Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple (November 21), Entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), Resurrection (Easter Sunday),Ascension,Holy Trinity.The Trinity is thus represented twice: as the three angels who visited Abraham (Genesis 18:1-10) and as Jesus Christ enthroned next to God the Father, with the Holy Spirit as a dove hovering between them. The latter scene is accompanied by a phrase from the Nicene Creed: "ascended into heaven and sits on the right hand of the Father".

They stand for The Mount of Golgopha.  Under these letters is the skull of Adam. Holy Tradition teaches that Christ was crucified in exactly the same place as Adam was buried.

The icon is in the symbolism of the Old Believer tradition. It is the eight pointed cross.
