Ecaterina Teodoroiu, 16.01.1894 - 23.08.1917, nicknamed "The Heroine of Jiu", was a heroine of the Romanian army from the First World War.
At the beginning of the First World War in 1916, he lost his brother, Nicolae, in the battle of Porceni. Later, she will fight under the command of Lieutenant Gheorghiţoiu, her brother's former boss.
Ecaterina Teodoroiu started her activity to support the war effort as a nurse at the hospital in Târgu Jiu. She was part of the "Mr. Tudor" scout cohort, led by Liviu Teiuşanu. On August 15, 1916, the day
Romania entered the war, all the scouts in the country were called to join the auxiliary services of the army. Among them was Cătălina, who took care of the wounded brought to Târgu Jiu, first as a scout, then as a nurse.
She stood out in the battles of Jiu and Filiași, where she was wounded in both legs. On March 19, 1917, King Ferdinand I personally awarded her the "Military Virtue" class II and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant,
receiving the command of a platoon from the 43/59 Lupeni Infantry Regiment. At the head of this platoon he fell heroically on the evening of August 22-23, 1917, during the battle of Marasesti.
The Mausoleum of Marasesti is a historical monument dedicated to the heroes of the First World War.
The mausoleum was erected on the spot where, in the summer of 1917, the battles of Marasesti took place, resulting in the victory of the Romanian troops. 480 officers and 21,000 Romanian soldiers were killed in the
clashes in Marasesti. The mausoleum currently houses the remains of 5073 soldiers and officers, in 154 individual crypts and 9 common crypts of 18 colors.
The monument, one of the most important in Europe, was built according to the plans of architects George Cristinel and Constantin Pomponiu between 1923-1938 and was officially inaugurated on September 18, 1938.
The works were started on September 28, 1924, in the presence of Queen Maria and other personalities of the time, and resumed after 12 years, in 1936. The bas-reliefs of the "Dome of Glory" were made by Cornel Medrea
and Ion Jalea and illustrate various moments of the battles in Marasesti. Eduard Săulescu executed the interior painting.
