Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a rare midcentury American mic that has been transformed into a very cool accent piece / lamp that will make for an excellent night light or simply to light up a corner of the room for a special ambiance.   This Knight 4550 model was loosely based on the period Electro Voice 664 dynamic cardioid microphone.

Pic # 2 shows this 4550 in an old Knight catalog I had and it's the only info I have ever come across on this mic.

This 4550 model microphone was manufactured in Chicago, Ill by Allied Radio Corp in the 1950's and I'm not sure what ever happened to this company but this 4550 was their shining star. This 4550 model was great for broadcasting and singing purposes with a beautiful warm tone and it's uni-directional pattern was excellent for cancelling out most noise from the side and rear.

This piece has been thoroughly cleaned and turned into a high quality LED mic lamp as the original element had died so this was an excellent candidate for the transformation.

I should really start by letting you know that this mic lamp is made by a gentleman in Canada named Gord D Birtch who is a Jack of all Trades. An artist and all around good guy with an eye for these older mics. He has an online store called Luminous Groove. I have several of his lamps at my residence and have been collecting them for about 2 years now. I collect his work as well as sell them. I send him the microphones and he turns them into this finished product.

All of the mics are gutted, cleaned and professionally wired with high quality, efficient American L.E.D lights. Gord will often install metal mesh screen in his mics. Some do not have them but it really comes down to how the mic is designed and how we want the light to be thrown.

This 4550 has the original mesh screens but still casts an nice ambiance once activated as you can see in the pictures provided. This will make an excellent accent piece anywhere in the home, studio or office and this mic lamp will screw onto any microphone desk or floor stand. I do have several vintage stands available in my Ebay store however.

I'm just trying to get his name and recognition out there. His work is top notch. Again, I have several of his pieces in my residence and everybody who comes over absolutely loves them.

The polished chrome body on this 4550 is in pretty good overall shape as seen in the pictures provided with some spots of fine pitting on parts of the mic. Zero nicks, dents, engravings or fractures. The front screens are free of tarnish or dents and the joint mechanism works perfectly allowing you to tilt the mic up and down directing the light as needed. You can read a book by this light if needed if the front is pointed towards the book but almost makes a better night light.

A cable connector is attached to the mic as it would be naturally completing the effect of the mic.

The cable itself is cloth covered and has an older vintage feel to it. It's appx 9 feet in length and has an on / off switch as you can see in pic # 12. Simply plug this in and your good to go. I believe these LED's are rated at 50,000 hours.

This in actual 4550 mic. Not a replica. I can't talk these lamps up enough. One of the coolest lamps you could own and perfect for that mid century vibe and an excellent gift for just about anybody.
