William Guthrie (1708 – 70) was a Scottish writer and journalist. He came to prominence during the 1730s as a
political journalist writing for the London ‘Gentlemen’s Magazine’.
During the latter part of his life he published a range of educational works
on geography and history. He is best known for Guthrie’s ‘Geographical, Historical and Commercial Grammar’ which was first
published in 1770 but was republished in many editions through until the
1850s. This map is from the 21st
edition published in 1809 with a new set of up to date maps by John Russell.
