This listing is for Deep Purple Heavy Metal Pioneers VHS Video Tape.

Heavy Metal Pioneers is an essential video for the collection any Purple fan, even though it is now woefully outdated. There was a time when Joe Lynn Turner was in the band, and Ritchie Blackmore was on guitar, but now of course it's Morse-Gillan-Glover-Paice-Lord (no complaints here), but it also means that this footage is caught between a rock and a hard place. You get an hour-long thumbnail sketch of the band's history, with interviews, snatches of concert footage, and still pictures. It's great that there's no annoying voice-over a la "VH-1 Behind The Music," and getting to hear the ultra-reclusive Blackmore speak is a revelation. What a wry sense of humor coupled with a rather regal demeanor! The concert footage seen herein is culled from such rare (in America) videos as Doing Their Thing (1970), Scandinavian Nights (1972), California Jam (1974), Paris 1985, and an ultra-rare Mk 4 performance which is NOT the infamous Rises Over Japan (1975). Also dig the 1968 Playboy After Dark--for those too young to remember, the band played on this show, which was mostly a vehicle for watching pretty girls dance with guys in tuxedoes drinking martinis while Hefner smoked a pipe!

The video's main drawbacks are as follows: 1. It ends in 1991 (a LOT has happened since then!) 2. No complete songs, only a minute or so from each. 3. No interviews with Evans, Simper, Coverdale, or Hughes. Also, Gillan appears way too briefly. 4. No source listed for the origin of the Mk. 4 footage. Also, they dub the studio version of "Stormbringer," which features Blackmore on guitar, not Bolin. However, get it if you can find it, because there's not enough of Purple on video, especially in America, where you're nobody unless you're Brittney Spears or Korn.
