Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a unique and rare 1950's era Stromberg Carlson MD-30A model mic based on the m ore common Astatic DNHZ dynamic microphone. This example was made into a custom LED lamp. The DNHZ was made specifically as an affordable, rugged all purpose microphone and was set at high impedance like most mics of the day. The DNHZ had an all metal  construction and an elegant look having a character to it that's all it's own.

This 2nd generation DNHZ / MD-30A made it's debut in the early 1940's and had a run of roughly 10 to 15 years until the design was changed. This early model has the riveted Stromberg name badge and lower F-11 adapter allowing you to screw this mic onto any microphone desk or floor stand.

I should start by letting you know that this mic lamp is made by a gentleman in Canada named Gord D Birtch who is a Jack of all Trades. An artist and all around good guy with an eye for these older mics. I have several of his mic lamps at my residence and have been collecting them for almost a year. I send him the microphones and he turns them into this finished product.

All of the mics are gutted, cleaned and professionally wired with high quality, efficient American L.E.D lights. Gord will often install metal mesh screen in his mics. Some do not have them but it really comes down to how the mic is designed and how we want the light to be thrown. I think this DNHZ looks better without them so none were installed and it acts more like a spot light without it.

This DNHZ casts an nice ambiance once activated as you can see in the pictures provided. The LED is a bit on the weaker side so this is almost more of a night lite. I do have stronger LED lamps available if you need something that really lights up a corner or ceiling. This will make an excellent accent piece anywhere in the home, studio or office and this mic lamp will screw onto any microphone desk or floor stand. I do have several vintage stands available in my Ebay store however.

If you'd like to contact Gord directly please just let me know and I'll provide you one of his links here on Ebay. You can get a better deal if you buy directly from him as I'm just trying to get his name and recognition out there. His work is top notch. Again, I have several of his pieces in my residence and everybody who comes over absolutely loves them.

The MD-30A itself is in very good overall physical condition. The painted body shows scuff marks, scratches and small paint loss mostly on top but it's free of any corrosion or dents. Please let the detailed pictures be your guide. I'd rate the true condition of this mic as a 7 + on a scale of 1 - 10. The joint mechanism on this mic has lots of tension and works perfectly allowing you to tilt the head backwards putting light wherever you need it. The lower chrome F-11 adapter is in very nice condition showing almost no wear at all and the cable exits the adapter just as a real mic cable would completing the effect.

The cable itself is a high quality cloth covered item and has an older vintage feel to it. It's appx 9 feet in length and has an on / off switch as you can see in pic # 9. Simply plug this in and your good to go. I believe these LED's are rated at 50,000 hours.

This in actual MD-30A mic. Not a replica. I can't talk these lamps up enough. More like sculptures and I was told Gord is going to be numbering these like paintings to indicate his particular work. He'll be making several more of these lamps in many makes and models so this is going to be more than just a lamp but an investment. Regardless, one of the coolest lamps you could own and perfect for that mid century vibe and an excellent gift for just about anybody.
