DESCRIPTION:
For sale is this very unusual and particularly scarce, mid to late 19th century American folk art New England primitive antique woven splint black ash, sloped sidewalls and baseplate, with a braided black ash vine upper rim, wrapped side handle gathering hand basket for the collection of eggs, herbs and vegetables from the garden. It has absolutely, 100% untouched and unaltered surfaces. The basket was only gently dusted with a soft, fine red sable haired brush to remove years of dust and sediment that had built up on the basket's surfaces. The hand basket hasn't been previously lacquered or varnished and has a naturally aged, nut brown patina and all original surfaces and antique, dry and matte finish. The handle's ingeniously attached to the sloped sidewall of the rear of the basket, with extended black ash vines, that provide structural stability and which are threaded into the black ash woven, wooden flat stock, which make up the basket's sidewalls and baseplate. A rare and extraordinary early American primitive basket. Very rare.
