DESCRIPTION:
Offered for your review and consideration is this absolutely fantastic, mid to late 19th century American folk art, New England primitive antique splint black ash hardwood, hand woven gathering basket, with an exquisitely hand carved black ash wooden handle, hand tied to the basket's sidewalls. The basket was found in a sprawling South Shore, Massachusetts fine estate, with an attached barn, horse stables and carriage house, all loaded with choice period antiques. This New England black ash gathering basket would've been realized anywhere from 1855, just before the onset of the US Civil War, to possibly as late as 1875. The basket features 100% wood construction and has nicely hand woven sidewalls. The hand carved wooden handle, bent with steam to the form it has now, has pointed ends, which dive down under the weaving of the sidewalls, fixing the carved handle in place. The steam bent, round black ash wooden sill is wrapped, completing the basket and firmly holding the looped handle in place. An intact, simply gorgeous mid to late 19th century American folk art, New England primitive antique gathering basket. Very fine.
