DESCRIPTION:
Offered for your review and consideration is this estate fresh and recently discovered in an architect designed, Greenwich, CT mid-century estate in southwest Connecticut. The oil on artist board is signed in the lower right corner 'Nekha,' but is signed in pencil in cursive writing on the back of the artist's board 'Sokoloff' in a proprietary nature. 'Nekha' may have been the name of the sitter and the object of the artist. The original, period picture frame gives clues to the painting's age, being a carved walnut hardwood frame with a linen and gold gilt liner, being the type of frame fashioned in the late 1950's to early 1960's. The painting represents the trend in American painting after WWII, with gestural, kinetic figuration, occupying an alternative space within the same genre as non-referential American Abstract Expressionism. Here, the portrait isn't beholden to naturalist representation but free of those shackles, with heavy impasto oil paint. Undamaged and estate fresh. Beautiful. Juicy. Wet.
