July 28, 1942 issue of Look magazine.  Legendary movie actor GARY COOPER is on the cover wearing a New York Yankees uniform.  Cooper gives one of his most iconic performances as the GREAT first baseman, LOU GEHRIG.  The movie was “ PRIDE of the YANKEES”.  This movie is still considered one of the best baseball movies ever made.  Hall of Famer PHIL RIZZUTO said he saw it over 80 times.     There are 3 pages of photos and text about this classic movie ( see photos).   Ironically, there is a picture of Jimmy Cagney in “ Yankee Doodle Dandy”.  At the following year’s Academy award ceremonies Gary Cooper announce Cagney’s name as the winner of the Best Actor trophy.  One Yankee giving the award to another Yankee.   On another page there is a picture and story about Alvin York, best known as SGT. York.  He was America’s most decorated soldier in World War I.   In 1941 Warner Brothers made a superb movie about York’s life.   Gary Cooper portrayed SGT. York and won the first of his 2 Oscar awards.  The second one was for High Noon.                So if you are a fan of either legendary men, Gary Cooper or Lou Gehrig, this 80 year old magazine is a magnificent gift to yourself or to someone special in your life.    E-mail me any questions you have.
