SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION –

Dominion Glass -

CROWN Canning Fruit Jars –

There were up to six different companies (all eventually connected to Dominion Glass) which used the word “CROWN” and a line-drawn crown image LOGO to mark their jars. There were also jars made with crown logos not associated with Dominion Glass Co.

Before 1928 - Jars with embossed “CROWN” with a crown drawing LOGO (NO “made in Canada” ID) – were made by – mouth-blown into molds, press and blow machines, or Owens machine (all CROWN jars with the Owens Bottle Machine scar are made by Dominion Glass Co. – as there was an exclusive association there).

Dominion Glass Co. (1886) was the name used by at least two glass manufacturers. The early Dominion Glass Co was acquired by Diamond Glass Co in 1898.

Diamond Glass Co. began as Foster Bros Glass Works, est 1855 and expanded across Canada as Diamond Glass Co. acquiring Burlington Glass, Hamilton Glass (Old St. James Plant), Nova Scotia Glass Company, and many additional factories in Alberta (Redcliff Plant), Ontario (Jefferson Glass Co., Jefferson Plant, Toronto; Toronto Glass, Parkdale Plant; A new Hamilton Plant, called Hamilton Plant; Sydenham Glass, Wallaceberg Plant) and Quebec (Diamond Flint, Delorimier Plant, Montreal; Canadian Glass, Pointe St. Charles Plant, Montreal); Diamond Glass Co, became Diamond Flint Glass (1902) then Dominion Glass Co in 191.  … becoming Domglass in 1976 then Libbey Inc. in 1993 – through various mergers and acquisitions.

Dominion Glass began manufacturing jars early on in production.

The earliest jars were marked with the word “DOMINION” – arched, on the side of the jar – towards the top. Those jars seem to date 1886-1898.

The Diamond-D LOGO was used from 1928 to the early 1970’s. It was the United States which required that all glass containers have their country of origin embossed on them – at that point Dominion Glass Co. adopted the Diamond-D trademark and began marking jars and bottles with “MADE IN CANADA”.

From 1940-43 a CODE of dots and lines were used (embossed on the base) to identify their month of manufacture

January-March – 1-dot – underlined beyond the dot

April-June – 2-dots - underlined beyond the dots

July-September – 3-dots - underlined beyond the dots

October-December – 4-dots - underlined beyond the dots

Dominion used a series of codes in addition to the Diamond-D LOGO – pair (mold cavity) number; year code (year of manufacture); month code (month of manufacture); factory code (plant ID); and the mold number – varying over the years.

For 30+ years the LOGO was at the center base, the pair number above, the mold number below – the year was a single digit to the right of the LOGO. Into the 1940’s the month was designated by a letter ..

A – Jan-Feb

B – Mar-Apr

C – May-June

D – July- Aug

E – Sept-Oct

F – Nov-Dec

From 1950-69 the months were represented by an image ranging from a vertical line to a complete box with a cross through the center.

Jan-Feb – vertical line

Mar-Apr – L-shape (2 lines same length)

May-June – U-shape (3 lines – same length)

July-Aug – Square-shape (4 lines – same length)

Sept-Oct – Square-shape w vertical line through center

Nov-Dec - Square-shape w vertical and horizontal lines through center

There was a single-dot code close the to LOGO to identify which plant the jar was made at –

Point St. Charles (dot to the left);

Hamilton (dot above);

Wallaceburg (dot to the right);

Redcliff (dot below);

Burnaby (dot to lower right);

Bramley (dot to upper left).
