Per molti decenni, sedie, dondoli, divani e mobili realizzati dalla società Antonio Volpe di Udine tra Otto e Novecento, sono stati erroneamente attribuiti alle manifatture delle più celebri industrie austriache dell'epoca, quali la Gebrüder Thonet o la Jacob & Josef Kohn . Bellezza, perfezione e originalità di quei modelli – realizzati con la tecnologia della curvatura a vapore del legno – erano invece frutto della creatività di una piccola industria friulana che, nata nei primi anni ottanta dell'Ottocento come produzione di sedie comuni, aveva successivamente arricchito e perfezionato il suo catalogo, tanto da competere con gli elegantissimi arredi d'oltralpe.

Gli eventi bellici del Novecento, uniti a tormentate vicissitudini familiari hanno cancellato tracce e memoria di questa realtà, la cui storia viene per la prima volta ricostruita nelle pagine di questo volume.

Il libro presenta i modelli più importanti realizzati dalla società Antonio Volpe – alcuni presenti oggi nelle collezioni di importanti musei internazionali – e pubblica i cataloghi storici del 1900, 1922 e 1939, contribuendo a fare luce su un capitolo importante ma sconosciuto della storia del design.

For many decades, chairs, swings, sofas and furniture made by the Antonio Volpe company of Udine between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have been erroneously attributed to the manufacturers of the most famous Austrian industries of the time, such as Gebrüder Thonet or Jacob & Josef Kohn. The beauty, perfection and originality of those models - made with the technology of steam bending of wood - were instead the result of the creativity of a small Friulian industry which, born in the early eighties of the nineteenth century as a production of common chairs, had subsequently enriched and perfected its catalog, so much so that it competes with the extremely elegant furnishings from beyond the Alps.

The war events of the twentieth century, combined with tormented family vicissitudes, have erased traces and memory of this reality, whose history is reconstructed for the first time in the pages of this volume.

The book presents the most important models made by the Antonio Volpe company - some present today in the collections of important international museums - and publishes the historical catalogs of 1900, 1922 and 1939, helping to shed light on an important but unknown chapter in the history of design.
