Aluma Hawk is a quick-dry, high-solids, corrosion-inhibiting coating designed for use on aluminum with no need of primer. Aluma Hawk is chromate-free and may be used above or below the waterline, but contains no antifouling characteristics. Aluma Hawk's unique dual purpose phenolic resin, allows it to be used as a primer directly on metal with or without a topcoat.

Ideal for Pontoon Boats, Jon Boats, House Boats and any Aluminum Surface.

  • Rust-inhibiting and lift resistant primer for lacquer / enamel based topcoats
  • Excellent adhesion on aluminum
  • Use as a primer and or topcoat on raw aluminum, fiberglass and other substrates
  • Rapid air dry
  • Chromate free

How To use:

UNPAINTED ALUMINUM: The surface must be dry and free of grease, wax, dirt or other contaminants. Sand 80 grit and clean. Wipe down with white vinegar prior to coating to etch the surface. Apply 2 coats of Aluma Hawk.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES: The surface must be clean and dry. Free of wax, grease and other contaminant. Scrape off all loose paints and sand with 180-220 grit sandpaper. Remove sanding residue with tack rag. Touch up all bare areas with Aluma Hawk and apply 2 full coats of Aluma Hawk.

USING ALUMA HAWK AS A PRIMER: Prepare the surface per the UNPAINTED ALUMINUM or PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACE instructions above. Apply one coat of Aluma Hawk if the surface is in good condition or two coats of Aluma Hawk if the surface is in rough condition. Scuff with 180-220 grit sandpaper if it has been longer than 48 hours since the Aluma Hawk application. Remove sanding residue with tack rag. Apply topcoat.

APPLICATION DATA

Method: Brush, roller or spray. Apply 2 coats of Aluma Hawk following the proper dry time requirements. No sanding is necessary between coats of Aluma Hawk if less than 48 hours between coats.

Thinning: Thin if necessary with MEK. In hot weather 5-10% may be added to maintain a wet edge.

CLEANUP: Use Sea Hawk Xylene or MEK

Application Tips: Aluma Hawk aluminum boat paint can be rolled, sprayed, or brushed.  We highly recommend rolling as the first and best option for a smooth finish.  Alumahawk can indeed be sprayed, but it is very difficult to do so without extensive experience.  It will need to be reduced by roughly 50% and applied in very thin swift coats.  While Alumahawk has a very high flash point, it also has a very slow cure time once it is on the boat and remains soft for up to a week before fully cured.   When spraying we have learned that applicators have a habit of thinking they need to spray thick, and this leads to poor curing and a bad finish.  The key is thin, close, and quick.  If the sprayer is too far away, the product will flash swiftly and appear to hit the surface clumpy despite coming out of the sprayer fine; it is flashing mid-air.  For this reason, we highly suggest rolling for the most even and smooth coat.  Brushing can be done, but again it needs to brush on thin, which can leave bristle lines and streaks depending on applicator experience and brush quality. As for thinning, we recommend MEK, or It can also be thinned with MIBK.  For states with VOC requirements that prevent the sale of those reducers, rolling truly is the best option, as most other reducers will not work well
