Here are some excerpts of reviews from Gear Slutz:

-- The CA73 DOES a classic Neev-like EQ sound, only a little dirtier maybe, and with a bit more edge or high-end resonance.

--- Adam from Mercenary …

We evaluated the CA73. I would call it more of an "English tone".  The CA73 has much more defined midrange and dense punchy low end as well as more headroom than similar pre’s.

Frequency response is where the neve-a-like clones live and die. Die more often then live I am sure. After checking the spec sheets on the web site, we noticed that the THD distortion rating was .070% @ 1k on the CA 73.

This was very interesting to me because in my mind this saturation is where you get that neve-a-like sound. More even order harmonic distortion in the signal path means "WARM SOUNDING".

It just has better frequency response. After our tests, I brought the pre over to the bench to "open the hood". I noticed that the build quality was much better on the CA73. From the input pots to the transformers there is just better parts in the CA73. Different output transformers.

In application I would say that the CA73 would be good for tracking; male, female vocals (soft or loud), bass, GTR, important elements in a drum kit (kick, snare, overheads) wind instruments, maybe acoustic GTR, since you have the filter set and the EQ to pull out some woof if needed.

-- We mic'd up my gigging guitar amp, a rockin' little 30-watter with a Telefunken RFT AK47. I plugged in my Gretsch Duo Jet and got a reverby clean sound, sort of a cowboy-surf twang thang.

…sounded "Britishy", with present mids and highs, along with very full bass. Yeah, they are semi thick, but in no way dark. There was plenty of string definition on clean chords. Nice and ringy. After a while, we felt the CA73 sounded more open and head-roomy.

All three of us in the room preferred the openess and bigness of the CA73…

Vintage Design CA73 sounded musical, and I wouldn't hesitate to use them.
