Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a gorgeous and rarer 1960 Shure Brothers 410 model "Hercules" controlled reluctance microphone which was sold as an RCA CR80W variant. The two mics are exactly the same but RCA sold this under license and it comes with the cable in which to operate. This mic is 100% complete and works perfectly. Output is 100% and it's omni-directional in nature.

This mic is a medium impedance microphone.

This RCA CR80W has it's original umber brown paint scheme and RCA logo. This is very nice original example of an RCA CR80W.

It should be noted that in 1960 these mics made a transition between the Controlled Reluctance and Controlled magnetic elements. The shell states Controlled Reluctance but the actual element is a Controlled magnetic. My go to source explained the story to me and why this is the case. It makes sense however as the Shure 55S model was changed in 1960 to the silver rectangular badge and lower pistol grip as well as the silk screens. I have however seen the older 55S model with the 1960 stamp which was the transition of change. Shure was still trying to sell the older model 55S off in 1961 and DuKane and Stromberg Carlson did the same with the 55S.

Anyways, this is why this model has the newer element. RCA was still using up the old shells.

It's deceiving but it makes this even more rare and unique than it would be otherwise.

Again, the original Shure element is present and it has 100% output. The element has a dirty, muddy sound which is normal for this mic and these are sought after with harmonica players due to the distinct sound. There are no cracks or fractures anywhere on the microphone. The all metal body has just three tiny paint chips on the front grill but as you can see from the detailed pics provided this mic is gorgeous! Incredible for a 60 + year old mic.

The original burgundy colored cloth screen looks mint with zero rips, holes, odors or discoloration. It's appx 3 inches tall X 2 1/2 inches wide. 3 1/2 inches tall with the stand adapter. The RCA logo looks perfect with no wear. This mic was designed to sit on it own as it still has the felt liner on the bottom. It also has the chrome stand adapter so it can be screwed onto any desk or floor stand you plan on using. The adapter is held on by a single screw so you can remove the adapter if you don't want to put this mic on a stand.

This microphone has an original short 4 foot cable with a Switchcraft male 1/4 inch end connector along with a detachable chrome RCA type adapter that can be used if you have specific audio equipment. The cable is soft, pliable and free of damage.

Again, these controlled magnetic elements are excellent for use for broadcasting. Otherwise this will be a great general purpose mic for broadcasting and has a cool "rockabilly" sound.

The CR80W is an easy 9 on  a scale of 1 - 10. These mics were so well built and rugged that there is no reason it can't keep working another 100 years. If you demand a mic that will continue to increase in value...this CR80W is your mic.
