AS MUCH AS musicians might like to talk technique, prattling
on about the finer points of pick attack or fingering can be like
staring at the inner workings of a clock without ever checking
to see what time it is.
That's particularly true of Carlos Santana. There's no doubt
the man knows how to play, and, if asked for specifics, will
happily provide them. But he makes it clear that mechanics is
just a part of it: the hands and fingers do the work but the
heart and soul play an equally critical role.
"Playing guitar is both a physical and a metaphysical experi-
ence," he wrote in the liner notes to Dance of the
Rainbow Serpent. "When you're a kid, you grab
yourself. Even when you're in church, you still
touch and feel yourself because you're discov-
ering certain things and how they feel. Certain
things that are physical and more than physical
at the same time—things that come from inside
your mind and heart.
"That, to me, is what playing the guitar is
about. Because when you can play from your
heart, you are being open and honest. And
when that is the case, the instrument
becomes the vehicle by which you can reach
others with the music.
"So my goal is always to play the guitar, or
any instrument, really, from the heart. When
I'm able to do that, I don't feel like I'm playing,
I feel like I'm transmitting. And I welcome this
spirit. This is the spirit that takes music beyond
earthly tones. And so to play the guitar is learn-
ing to transmit, actually to both receive and
transmit something beyond all of this."
And much more!
