Description

A large and impressive Royal Doulton pitcher/jug designed by Charles Noke in 1933. The pitcher depicts Charles Dickens day dreaming about a host of characters who have appeared in his novels. Other than Dickens, there are 51 characters depicted whose names appear listed on the base. The handle is depicted as Poor Joe a  crossing sweeper in the novel Bleak House. I believe that the mask head spout may be modeled on the fictitious character Jacob Marley the late business partner of Ebenezer Scrooge from the novel A Christmas Carol. The head is shrouded with laurel leaves. An inscription on the side of the pitcher reads 'Keep my memories green, Noke'  The pitcher is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The pitcher is 10 1/2" tall, 9 1/2" from spout to handle; the unpacked weight is 3lb 13oz. The base is well marked with the list of characters and the design registration number 771321 indicating a date of 1932.
