Copper engraved map on hand laid paper. Hand colouring.
Tommaso Porcacchi Da Castilione (1530-85)was a printer and publisher working in Venice during
the later half of the 16th Century.
In 1572 he published ‘L’Isole Pui
Famous Del Mondo’ (Famous islands of the world). The book was reissued in 1576,1590, 1604,1605
and 1620.
The maps were engraved by
Girolamo Porro who, it seems, copied from a manuscript source without much
comprehension. The selection of place names is unusual (London is omitted!) and
a few of the counties are shown with Lantinised names.
Page size is 18cm by 14cm
Map area is in good condition for age, engravings are clear. Some browning and marks. Hand colouring.
Italian text on the reverse.
