Two books illustrated by Joseph Pennell.  Both first English editions published by J. B. Lippincott Company, London.  Common to both books:  Both are very good minus.  Gray/black tweedy cloth covered boards with black stamped lettering and graphics, along with gilt lettering on front and back panels and spine.  Upper external page edges are gilt.  Boards are in similar condition with spines and extremities sunned.  Edges and corners at head and tail of board spines are rubbed and frayed. The lower fore-edge corners and adjacent edges are rubbed through.  Side and lower page edges are age- and soil-darkened and with foxing.  Lower edges are untrimmed.  Issues unique to each are listed below:
1) Castilian Days by The Honble. John Hay.  Published 1903.  Over 100 Joseph Pennell illustrations of which 12 are Photogravures with tissue guards.  Front and back panels are soiled overall and with several faint stains and smudges.  Small rub-through on the back fold of spine.  Inside front and back gutters are cracked, less so on the back gutter.   Previous owner's info. and other writing, as well as tape residue on FFEP.  Same previous owner's info.on title page. Small bookseller's label on back paste down.  Text pages are age-toned.  No internal writing or tears.  Text block is sound.
2) English Hours by Henry James.  Published 1905. With 91 illustrations by Joseph Pennell.  Front and back panels are soiled overall and with several stains and smudges, especially on the front panel, spine and spine folds.  Upper- and lower-most edges of front and back panels are darkened (age? soil?) and with one or two shallow bumps.  Edges at head and tail of board spine are crimped, corners are split.  Rubs to upper fore-edge corner tips.  Lower front and back fore-edge corners are bumped. Inside front gutter is cracked.  Shadow transfers, smudges and a bit of foxing to front and back end-papers.  Internal foxing limited to several front and back pages.  Minimal age-toning, limited to margins.  No internal writing or tears.  Text block is sound.
