The Game

The Story
It seems the mayor of Aurora is being forced to make cutbacks to balance the city's budget, and Cable Access is one of the programs that will suffer. This puts Wayne's TV show in jeopardy of suffering the bleak fate of cancellation.

The solution is a Pizzathon. Wayne and Garth have to scour the vast wasteland of Aurora, Illinois in search of help to get their Save Wayne's World benefit underway. The premise is similar to Wayne's World II where the duo puts on Waynestock, a concert to raise cash. (Garth to Christopher Walken: "Waaaynestock!") They have only three days to raise $50,000 and save themselves from early retirement. Along the way they meet familiar faces, and deal with many unfamiliar situations in order to raise the cash and keep their show alive.

The Game
Wayne's World is a very entertaining game especially if played with the right attitude. Do not expect an epic quest to save the world, or full-motion cinematic visual extravaganza. After all, the original premise is based on a concept that does not even take itself seriously. However, underneath the humor and charm, there is a real adventure, with puzzles to solve, time strategy, and plot, so do not be fooled. The game may be lighthearted, but it is also real.

With that said, Wayne's World shines by capturing the spirit of the movies. This is done directly, by including actual characters such as Cassandra and Stacy (the Psycho Hose Beast) and indirectly, through situations that would have been at home on screen. Similarly, the adventure includes several locations from the films, such as the Donut Shop, the Channel 35 studio, Cassandra's Loft, and others, as well as brand new areas. The game also abounds with audio clips from the movie: In addition to the soudbytes schwing! and excellent!, there are lines that you will recognize if you are a Wayne's World fan. And what Wayne's World game would be complete without an Extreme Close-Up! feature. Though there is not much call for it in the game (which makes sense as it was only used for general silliness on SNL) it is fun and maintains the slapstick Wayne's World atmosphere.

Just as Wayne and Garth shared equal billing in the movies and on SNL, you will play both characters in the adventure, with the ability to flip between them. This is fun because it accentuates the duo's friendship through their interaction, and givess lots of opportunity for Wayne's World dialog. Most importantly it lets their different personalities showthrough. I mean, could you imagine Wayne seriously asking Garth if he ever thought Bugs Bunny was a babe when dressed as a girl bunny? Or Wayne smashing a mechanical hand to pieces with a hammer because he "fears change?" Nope, situations like that belong only to Garth -- and when you play Garth your actions will be fashioned by his personality. This mechanism not only enhances the story, but as a computer adventure adds a level of complexity. As you probably have guessed you will need both characters to solve the game.

Of course, no worthwhile WW adventure would be complete without Garth's AMC Pacer, aka The Mirthmobile. You cruise around lovely Aurora easily via the Mirthmobile's Onboard Municipal Navigation System. This displays a map of Aurora, which highlights the town's hot spots. This is a fast way to zip around the game's various locations without being bogged down by heavy interface. The focus is on the adventure, not the Aurora traffic lights.

Ultimately, the movies and SNL run are about two good friends living life, goofing off, and having a blast. This personality makes it to the game, producing an adventure with satire, laughs, and most off all a feeling of camaraderie. This is a buddy movie brought to the PC. As a computer game the plot works because everything that happens to Wayne and Garth makes sense in the Wayne's World universe. Nothing seems out of place. The game was designed by obvious fans of the movies and it shows.

Note: My compatibility CD does not alter the retail game or bypass copy protection. It allows the original media to install and run correctly on any recent version of Windows.
