DESCRIPTION: Here is a late 19th century Wedgwood bone china cup and saucer. Hand painted in an aesthetic design with the cup having a bird and a red and yellow butterfly to the other side with both being among grasses with some of the grass top having raised gilt seeds. The cup has four inverted cantered corners having a gilt ground with a red pattern. The handle of the cup is of loop form and is gilded down the back. The saucer having a bird two butterflies among grasses with some of the grass tops having raised gilt seeds. The handle of the cup is of loop form and is gilded down the back. The top rim and the base of the cup are gilt lined with a gilt dentil pattern to the top outside rim. The saucers in the same pattern with one being painted with a bird, a mauve butterfly and two dragonflies. The other saucer painted with a bird and a blue butterfly with both saucers having grasses and some with raised gilt seeded tops. The saucers having wavy rims. All pieces are marked to the base with a blue Portland vase over Wedgwood back stamp with the saucers having a red painted pattern number 2/2203. Dates between 1879 to 1891.
The china of this cup and saucer is quite fine, almost egg shell and has a very thin glaze.

SIZE: The cup measures 2 3/8 inches high and 2 7/8 inches at widest point in diameter. The saucers measures 5 inches in diameter. Weighs 250 g before packing.

CONDITION: The cup has gilt ware to the top rim, to the gilt band around the base and a small area on the handle. The top rim and the gilt band around the base have a little ware. The handle has minor gilt ware. The saucers  both have some heavy stacking ware to the red and gilt panes at the well end. The saucer with the blue butterfly has allover lined crazing to the front and back with a little gilt ware to the top rim. the other saucer having lined crazing to the well but not so much as the other saucer. is a little fine line crazing to the well of the saucer but none to the back of the saucer. Minor gilt ware to the top rim.
This and other pieces i have listed have a very fine glaze and are susceptible to crazing. Still displays well
