DEDHAM PITCHER

made by famous POTTERY SHED of West Concord, Mass.

Graceful rounded shape

with classic Rabbits going around

This is vintage 1990s from regular stops at the Pottery Shed in West Concord on trips between Providence RI and Portland ME!!!

This is a wonderful reproduction Dedham pottery pitcher created by The Potting Shed Inc. and signed on the bottom by the artist in 1993 with the star and USA.  The pitcher is in the rounded Williamsburg Colonial style in the intentional "crackle" finish with a blue rabbit motif. The pitcher is in very good condition having no chips or cracks -- but do expect imperfections in and out due to its hand made production.

Use for syrup at the table, milk or cream for the coffee, batter over the griddle, or for a lovely vase!

Appx 6" height x 5" (spout to the handle edge) x 3" diam footprint. Appx 4" diam belly

Breakables will be double packed for better assured safety in transit, which adds weight

From the Web"The original Dedham Pottery (1895-1943) started in 1895. Its origins are with Chelsea Keramic Art Works (hallmark CKAW), established in 1872 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, by members of the Robertson family. The factory closed in 1889 and was reorganized as Chelsea Pottery U.S. (CPUS) in 1891.

-----With a move to Dedham Mass to larger location, the owners renamed to Dedham Pottery. It was famous for its intentionally crackleware dishware, which picture blue outlines of animals, flowers, and other natural motifs. The most popular design, a rabbit, became the identifying signature of Dedhamware. The factory closed in 1943 during WWII.
-----In 1973 Charlotte (Chotsie) Starr, a descendant of the Robertson family and pottery hobbyist, began supplementing her own collection of her mother’s Dedham ware with self-made reproductions.  Friend and family requests poured in, and in 1975 she began selling through local shops. Like the original Dedhamware, all the reproductions were made entirely by hand. Because the original molds were no longer available, no piece was ever identical in shape to the antique Robertsons' Dedhamware

------In 1977, she and her sons officially opened The Potting Shed (1977-2018) in an old New England factory building in Concord, Massachusetts.  She employed local artists, and developed an enlarged product line that carried throughout the USA.  Each painted item is supposed to have the artist initials, a date, and the Potting Shed’s star logo, Some are also marked with the product code and often with "USA.”  However, don’t be surprised if you find a piece not so marked, due to artist error or oversight - or artist cleverness like those who made a star out of their initials or encrypted the date within the product number.
-----In 2009, her surviving son Richard (Christopher died in 2007) took over full-time and moved operations to Acton.  During her retirement, she occasionally visited the pottery, but spend her final days reading and gardening.  In 2012, 91-year old Chotsie passed away, and the son then moved their retail operations to Framingham, opening more online sales.  In 2018, Richard retired, and The Potting Shed closed its doors for good -- making the remaining Pottery Shed Dedhamware even more collectible!"
