The match was delayed for seven minutes after a clash of heads between the Iranian goalkeeper Beiranvand and a team-mate. Beiranvand appeared to be convinced to continue by Iran captain Hajsafi, despite appearing to be dazed and taking his gloves and shirt off after he received treatment, drawing criticism from the brain injury charity Headway.[21]

The 6–2 defeat of Iran makes this the worst ever loss of Iran in a FIFA World Cup history, surpassing its 4–1 defeat to Peru dated back to the 1978 FIFA World Cup.[22]
