BLACK KEM card BOX

with 2 decks of old Non-Kem Playing Cards

Butterflies on Gold backs

We think this black box is bakelite, but not 100% sure, if you know, let us know.  Its some kind of early plastic for sure.  Very thick with a dull sheen

Labeled with highly Art Deco, raised lettering at the top: ''KEM'' with a fleabite out of the bottom right of the M

A couple of chips on the sides as visible in the photos

Marked in raised lettering underneath "KEM PLAYING CARD COMPANY New York MADE IN U.S.A."

2 old decks of cards that are not Kem but were found with the box, so including:  Both have gold backgrounds with Butterflies and Flowers: Monarch butterfly with yellow Hibiscus? flowers, and a Swallowtail with pink flowers.  Certainly replace with your own vintage cards!

Expect typical creasing, bends, rough corners, etc. for cards well used and enjoyed through the decades.  There are 2 Jokers for each deck.  There was also a 3rd Joker that was made into a missing card for each deck: 6 of Spades and 9 of diamonds.  Because the jokers matched the deck, they work during play.

There's another old Kem card found inside that is for ordering "Missing Cards" -- The Art Deco styling with Tropical Birds makes us think this is sadly the last one remainder of the original decks of Kem cards.  Including because its been in there for a good long time.  Wish they still were in business!  10c for a card and 5c for handling!!  Address to "New York, 18, N.Y."

FYI: The first postal zoning system had been developed during WWII, late 30s to 1940s, assigning 2-digit numbers to the largest metro areas across the country. This helps us date the card box.  That system was later expanded with the introduction of the 5-digit number in 1963, made mandatory in 1967, and extended to the ZIP+4 format in 1983,
