This is a beautiful Champlevé frame imported from France.  Champlevé is enamel work without the wires of cloisonné.  It is stamped on the back P. Kauffman, Broadway, NY, this is most likely the store that imported the piece.  The frame enamel is intact, there are no chips or cracks noted.  The bronze is in need of polishing or had been gold gilt at one time.  The frame stand is sturdy and also in bronze the hinge is welded to the back panel.  This was made around 1860, we tried to see if P. Kauffman was still in business in N.Y. but could not find that particular address. There is a piece of glass and it does have a chip at the top right corner.  It cannot be seen from the outside as the frame rim is covering the chip. The glass can easily be replaced for about 5 dollars.

It is a beauty and rare to find a piece like this that is not damaged.

The frame is 10 1/8" x 7 1/8"
The visual picture area is 5 5/8" x 4 7/8" but it can fit average picture size as there is room beyond the glass.
