English Channel by John Cowley printed in 1741

Copper engraved map on hand laid paper with later hand colouring.

John Cowley (active 1733-44) was a and engineer and geographer who became 'Geographer to King George II' in 1744.  He designed a drew a series of maps of English counties for 'Dodsley's Geography of England' first published in 1741 by the London printer and publisher Robert Dodsley (1703-64).  This map is from the 1741 edition. 

Page size is 21cm by 41.5cm
Map area is in good condition for age, engravings are clear. Some repairs to the back of the map.  There is a very small hole in the middle of the map which has been repaired. Hand colouring.
