BBC Micro & Master - High Quality Power Supply 3 Capacitor Kit

With Wurth "RedExpert" C9, rated to +125 Degrees

If you're servicing a Model B Power Supply, I strongly recommend replacing ALL the electrolytic caps,
using my complete 11 capacitor kit, even if the originals look ok from the top.
I also now do an advanced 12 capacitor kit for the Master 128.
Please see my other listings.

This is a Buy-It-Now sale for a set of three capacitors, use to refurbish the most common issues with Switch Mode Power Supplies found in the majority of BBC Micros, and Master 128s.

Turned your BBC Micro on after 30 years being in the loft, only for it to go bang in a puff of smoke? Bought your latest "untested" machine off eBay, only to find it doesn't turn on? You've got the standard power supply issues that are common to all these machines, and it just needs some little TLC.

Now, most issues of a PSU going pop in a cloud of smoke can be resolved by changing just three capacitors in the circuit. C1, C2, and C9. If the PSU was working before the "big bang", then your PSU should be back in business. However, for best reliability, I still recommend changing the full set of 11 or 12 caps (2x X2s and 9 or 10 electrolytics), see my other listings for full kits. but at the end of the day it's your machine, and if you're happy just doing the bare minimum, then that's up to you, so please read on.

The kit comes with three main caps that should always be changed as a bare minimum when servicing your power supply:

The RIFA brand capacitors, now manufactured by KEMET, are made to a better standard than the ones 30+ years ago, and are not prone to the same failures as the earlier ones. They also now have a temperature rating of 110 degrees Celsius, whereas the original ones fitted were usually only 85 degrees, this helps them survive longer when the PSU is running. The new, more expensive C9 supplied with this kit is also rated to +125 degrees. This is to help even further the longevity and reliability of the part, as it is mounted very close to hot components. All three capacitors are the exact correct lead spacing for the PCB to fit without having to splay the leads out to force them to fit. Other kits you may see being sold on eBay and elsewhere may supply cheap low grade Chinese capacitors. They won't last as long as the genuine high quality ones supplied here. Even kits that purport to have the same "high quality" capacitors, do not supply a +125 degree rated C9.

The kit also comes with a printed fitting guide, to help you with the replacement. The components are the correct type for the power supplies found in the vast majority of machines, including ASTEC and BSR for the Model B and HITRON for the BBC Master. There are a few different brands of PSU, such as those by WONGS for the Model B and the ASTEC for the BBC Master, that are laid out different, and may need different components. Please email me with a photo of your PSU if you're not sure.

If you prefer not to do the work yourself, I can either refurbish your power supply, or supply you with an outright replacement, if I have stock.

IMPORTANT: You will need to be able to solder and de-solder competently in order to fit these components. You also need to be aware that mains power supplies contain dangerous voltages, even for a while after they've been disconnected from the mains. and should be worked on with care.
