Some readers may consider THE AMBASSADOR by Morris L. West to be a form of sequel to the 1958 novel THE UGLY AMERICAN by Eugene Burdick & William Lederer, since the former novel accurately portrays the end results of the failures, ignorance & pretentiousness of American diplomacy as outlined in the latter book:  a United States ambassador led astray by the vested American "interests" in South Viet-Nam, who ignores or belittles the underlying reasons for the political unrest in the country and world region to where he has been sent -- with disastrous results not only for South Viet-Nam, but for the United States as well.
