The Ninth National Eucharistic Congress

In late June of 1941, St. Paul hosted the 9th National Eucharistic Congress. This five day meeting of clergy,
religious and laity from across the United States celebrated the sacrament of the Eucharist and
included public adorations and masses, parades, and meetings by different groups involved in the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Dougherty of Philadelphia served as the official papal legate for the event. The center of the
congress’s activities was at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, however public events took place across
both Minneapolis and St. Paul. Major events were held at Union Depot, the Minneapolis Auditorium,
the St. Paul Auditorium, the Cathedral of St. Paul and the Basilica of St. Mary (which was officially consecrated
by Cardinal Dougherty).

The event’s closing parade attracted a crowd estimated at 80,000! Various other parades and events
attracted crowds of thousands.
