* * * *   THE NATIONS MOTIF BY GORHAM   -   UNITED STATES    * * * *

   For sale is an antique solid cast sterling silver five o'clock tea spoon in THE

NATIONS pattern (circa 1885), made by the Gorham Manufacturing Co.  The

Coat of Arms of 12 Nations form the basis of this multi-motif design, which was

made and sold only in sets of five o'clock tea spoons and oyster forks.  Each 

spoon is roughly 5" long and has the Coat of Arms of a different nation atop the 

handle, detailed reverse, and repousse decoration in its bowl.  Handle reverses 

are detailed also.  Nations included are: United States, England, Germany, Scotland, 

Russia, France, Norway and Sweden (together), Spain, Ireland, Switzerland, 

Portugal, and Turkey.  They first appeared in the Gorham 1885 catalog.

   This tea spoon represents the United States, and it is in excellent used condition.  

Marks include the Gorham maker's mark and STERLING.  Nice original patina, 

hand cleaned only with no issues to report.  There is no monogram.
