Great Britain and Ireland by Alexis Hubert Jaillot printed by Jan Elwe in 1786

Copper engraved map on hand laid paper with later hand colouring.

Alexis Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712) was one of the most important French cartographers of the 17th century. Originally trained as a sculptor, he but became interested in cartography after marrying the daughter of the map colourist Nicolas Berey. Berey had inherited many of Nicolas Sanson's maps and from 1669 Jaillot set about reengraving and updating these maps. Many of his maps were printed in Amsterdam as well as France.  This is the fourth state of the map, printed in Amsterdam by the Dutch printer and publisher Jan Elwe in 1786.
