     When Jedediah Hotchkiss obeyed Stonewall Jackson's first order to make him a map of the Shenandoah Valley, he entered upon a career which was to supply a desperate need of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.  Both sides had begun the war, as eminent Civil War historian T. Harry Williams points out in his Foreword to Make Me a Map of the Valley, "with no reliable maps of the area in which they would fight."  United States government agencies had mapped such areas as the Great Lakes region and the Far West, but no one had thought to map the part of the country where the Union and Confederacy were to engage in their tragic struggle...
